Multi Tasking Today & How Do I Start My Quilt

Hi all!

How are you today? Today I am going to be pretty busy! I have to be able to multi task. And look my best this evening :)

Let's see if I can do it. Going to spend the day with some of my favorite girls.. My baby girl, Momma, and Sissy #2. (My other favorite girls cannot come) Probably lunch and maybe we can fit in either some thrifting or antiquing!!

Have lots of Mommy duties I need to get finished, too. So a busy morning :)

Each roll has 24 strips 2 1/2"x42" I bought these at Big Lots, 100% cotton.
This is the fabric I bought. I like the red strips up front the best. Do you like the fabric choice? The colors are great for fall and I couldn't beat the price for my first quilt at $7.50 each. After I get some practice I will probably try some from Donna's Lavender Nest fabric store. She has so many pretty fabrics to choose from :)

Thank you all so much for your advise on my first quilt. I have some questions before I begin.
  • What kind of thread should I choose? Is their a special weight, does it have to be cotton, and how do I choose color?
  • I bought three small jelly rolls. I was going to start out big. Should I start out small?
  • I was recommended the Jelly Roll Jam and the Jelly Roll Race. Do you prefer one over the other for a larger quilt?
  • What else can you tell me? I know basically nothing, lol!
I better get in gear with this, but finding myself a little chicken to start.

Yup, that is me , haha! Hope I figure it out?

Have a super blessed day!!

  4. Susie,

Quilting is not my forte however, I know you'll do just fine. You've found some good deals to get started. Have fun!!! Update us on your progress.

  6. I think the Jelly Roll Jam instructions will give an excellent result. She is very particular. The Jelly Roll Race instructions are quite good, but you will find the result is not always what you want. It is more for someone who is simply bored. Making the top is not always as easy as you might think. There will be tears of frustration when things do not fit exactly. The actual quilting part sounds dull but is not. Always have a strong purpose when you are making a quilt as it takes your personality and pulls it from your toenails out your ears. That will be the feeling. The result is worth it.

  7. Hello lovely Susie, it sounds like you have a fun day planned with the girls, just what we need, right! I am currently busy with my first quilt, or shall I say have been for some time, as there are so many projects going at the same time. What someone told me is to start small so you can get to grips with it first and to be honest it makes sense, so I have taken their advice. I hope you get all the advice you need and look forward to following the progress. Enjoy your week xoxo

  8. Thread...I use a neutral color. 99.9% of the time I use white or cream. I use Connecting Threads 50 weight cotton thread. Its good thread and inexpensive. Another fabulous thread is Aurofil. It is much more expensive, but really lovely thread.

There are pros and cons to both the projects you mentioned.

The pro with the Jelly Roll Race is there are no seams to match up. The con is the long strips of fabric can stretch and bow (curve a bit) instead of laying nice and flat and straight. There will be long pieces to press. It can be done, though. So don't be afraid of it, it's just a caution to keep in mind.

The Jelly Roll Jam pro is you will have smaller blocks to work with and to press. The con, you will have a few seams to line up. Not many though and again, this pattern is forgiving so if they don't line up just right, they won't be very noticeable.

All that said...YOU CAN DO THIS!! And I think you will have fun. =)

Google is a huge help and you can ask if you need help with something. =)

  10. You are asking the wrong girl! Somewhere I had to draw the crafting line and quilting is where I drew it.....Oh, but it is so tempting!!! I love the fabric and what a price!! So glad we don't wear curlers any more...We don't have to carry around a whole dryer apparatus LOL!

  12. Hi Susie, it sounds like we are in the same boat. I want to try my hand at quilting, too. I was going to start with a baby quilt, and I know what you mean about being chicken to get started. I just want to do it right and have it turn out nice. As for the comment that you left on my blog: if you haven't tried free hand on your machine . . . give it a try, you'll love the new possibilities for creating that it brings :) and yes it is very similar to quilting :)
Have a lovely day, your blogging sister, Connie :)

  13. Hi Susie,
Thanks for visiting! I am also a quilter and I would recommend starting with something small. A large quilt can be daunting. I love to hand piece and hand quilt, it is so much more relaxing to me than sitting at a sewing machine. Down side to that is that it takes a long time to finish a project.
I will be working on my blog soon. I have been so busy canning! I have a few Fall projects started and will be blogging about them before the end of the week. Thanks for being my first follower, again. Good luck with you quilting adventure!

  14. Hi Suzie! first, LOVE the vintage photo with the hair dryer!!! I remember my sister's using the type with the bonnet but hooked to a "box", salon style. I'm no quilting diva, but there is strong "quilting thread" that I used for my last quilt. I've been wanting to do a strip quilt, too. Good luck!

  17. The vintage hair dryer. We had one when I was a teenager. I am very excited to see your quilt. My advice,,,start out small. My first quilt was a table topper, you will like sewing with the jelly rolls. Have fun.
    Blessings to you.

  18. Not sure what you decided on for your first quilt, but I'd say- keep it small. That way it is much more manageable and 'do-able'! If you are looking for help "Craftsy" has lots of online lessons and projects, many of which are free. And YouTube too! The important thing to remember- have fun!

I hope you had a fun day with your favorite girls.
This is the most perfect pattern for your jelly rolls and for a beginner excellent tut and video.
