Google Changes & Followers

March 31, 2012 Google will be making many changes..
As I visit my favorite blogs, I see many comments and confusion
I am also confused, but have decided to post some links here on this post and hope that maybe some of this confusion can be filtered through.
I know that we all care about our blogs and our followers and the blogs we follow.
Please feel free to add any comments that may help us figure this out.
QUESTION:
Do we need to add a google+ account?

Blessings,

  1. I have no idea on what is going on!! Guess I better find out. I thought someone in blog land said that if you follow from blogger you are okay...however don't quote me on that!!! I'm a computer dummy!

    1. You are not a dummy! We just need to know so we can prepare for any changes that might affect us. I also, heard that same thing :)

  2. I hate changes!!! I don't even know what Google reader is. I just read everything on the Dashboard reader thingie. Will google reader let us add those blogs that aren't on Google Friend Connect?

    1. I am certainly trying to figure things out, too. But rom what I understand, they have to follow you on google reader. You can add a subcribe to my google + button onto your page.

  4. The confusing thing for me, is my google+ account, can't even use the same name as my blog. But it is close, Susie HomeMaker

  5. I have no idea what is going on. It is hard to ask question if you do not understand. I trust it does not change too much or I will be totally lost. Any simple answers you find out, would be appreciated.

  7. Thanks for the links, I read them, and to be honest, I am not really ready for all this, but I am going to try not to think about it too much or I'll give myself a headache.

  8. Hi there! Hopefully I can shed a bit of light on this. GFC is ONLY going away for non-blogger sites...Like WordPress or any other website that's not Blogger. If you use Blogger you won't be affected by this change UNLESS you are currently following any non-blogger sites through GFC right now. I'm not positive but I'm assuming their blog feed will no long show up in your Blogger dashboard.

The changes are taking place on March 1st. Here is the official quote from Google about the change, "Friend Connect allows webmasters to add social features to their sites by embedding a few snippets of code. We're retiring the service for all non-Blogger sites on March 1, 2012. We encourage affected sites to create a Google+ page and place a Google+ badge on their site so they can bring their community of followers to Google+ and use new features like Circles and Hangouts to keep in touch."

You can find the rest of the article here: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/11/more-spring-cleaning-out-of-season.html

Google is basically wanting to streamline (or force) everyone into using "Google +". But I'm pretty sure that even with Google + you still won't be able to read a blog feed in your dashboard. It will be more like a facebook page. Now, there is a new and universal way to followe ALL blogs/websites and it's called "Linky Followers". I would suggest opening a free Linky Followers account and following all your favorite non-blogger sites through this. Yes, it's annoying because it means you will have to look at some blogs through your Blogger dashboard and some through your Linky Followers dashboard...but it's better than nothing! And if your favorite non-blogger sites aren't already using Linky Followers- tell them about it!

Anyway, I hoped this helped some. I just don't want people to panic! And I'm sure I'll be sharing more about this on my website as it gets closer to March 1st. =)
